The “Ravana” of the UNFCCC negotiations

Jonathan Pershing as the Ravana in the UNFCCC
Happy Dushhehra to all readers in India and lets celebrate the victory of evil over good. I’m really missing burning the Ravana here, all the way in Bangkok. But , instead what I am aim to do through this post would be to try and burn the Ravana present here in the negotiations.
Yesterday at the long term cooperative action meeting we saw the US negotiator Jonathan Pershing defying the protocol rules and quoting the environment minister of India which won him the role of the perfect Ravana in our very own Ram-”leela” at UNFCCC negotiations.
A very well played tactic to buy some more time for the USA to make a ambitious or rather no statement.
Ok , so how much time do you need?
Haven’t you taken enough?
Maybe time enough for you to build yourself a home on the moon after polluting and making the planet uninhabitable !
Whats with asking for a new combined sub group to chalk out the mechanism for the so called” architecture” of the agreement for developed and developing countries?
Someone needs to tell Mr Pershing that we aren’t going to buy this argument anymore !
Stop stalling negotiations and excusing yourself for doing NOTHING and getting away with it.
Do you decide the architecture of you’re home first or whose funding the building and who’s paying the rent on that space?
Stop with all the big words (aka- Waxmen Markey Bill) , pass the bill atleast and then make such a statement to others in the Plenary!
But our very own Rama also known as Ambassador Dasgupta with all his godly demeanor laughed and said very politely that ” Since I am here representing my country, I guess I would know best of what position my environment minister wishes to take “. Kudos to Mr Dasgupta , you have a new set of followers who have been silently worshiping you in the negotiations.
In the beginning of the day just after the opening ceremony , I had a little conversation with Ambassador Dasgupta who happened to tell me that the focus should be on maintaining the Bali and Convention principles and the one great thing to look out for is the official launch of the Solar mission and Renewable Energy Mission in November. When I asked him of whether he hated what I did, as tracking him everywhere, he just laughed and mentioned that as far as you’re doing your job and doing it well , no one should have a problem.
Mr Prodipto Ghosh , just happended to arrive right after I finished my conversation with Dasgupta, and was extremely interested in guiding me of what I should do after my undergraduate degree and how I should map out my career from here. Of course , its nice when he takes as much interest in me , that I take in what he’s doing. But what makes him was extremely angry and pretty much just give up on the negotiations is INEQUITY. When I asked him why he didnt voice the anger towards the lack of leadership of the Annex 1 he said , who’s listening Leela???
Do they ever listen to us?
Well, I’ll tell you sir , WE ALL ARE LISTENING BACK IN INDIA ! WE all are listening and supporting you to pressure the A1 ahead. Give Ghosh Sir a sense of security !Prove it that we’re listening! Write a comment and I will pass the msg to him…
Great going India, burning the Ravana and bringing out the godly Ram with great domestic actions back in the country and we are glad that you are progressive and constructive to NOT block negotiations.

Our negotiators at Bangkok
I wish the Ravana is burnt out and countries dont block the negotiations and let our efforts go waste!
Hoping to celebrate the good soon, some positive negotiation outcomes at the end of Bangkok. maybe DIWALI , what say guys?

I really hope that the Ravana is burnt finally in a eco-friendly way and countries specially US don’t block the negotiation. Its an emergency situation that the world is facing today and there is NO PLAN B. This dec. we must get something out of Copenhagen otherwise the old UNFCCC model will not survive.
We are watching your action Ghosh Sir.
Thanks for sharing this. I think it is shameful how the US is behaving in general. They and the rest of the “developed” countries have really caused this problem; they should be coming to us, hat in hand, offering apologies and real assistance. But I’m not too optimistic about the prospects of that.
victory of evil over good? :p lol .. nice post.
NICE! Let poor Mr Ghosh know that we are all behind him, and behind ANYONE who will work sincerely towards a COMPREHENSIVE, and PROGRESSIVE solution.
The reason our “Leaders” are there is because we have asked them to LEAD us. Their job (all of them) is to forge ahead, and LEAD their supporters, and the people they represent, towards a healthy future. There is nothing in their job profile that says they must appeal to the lowest common denominator! There job is not to make everyone happy, it’s to LEAD. So, dear leaders, please, take your positions, and GO FOR THE FUTURE!!!!
And if you happen to get the phone number of our “Ravana”, I would like to call him.
Well.. victory of good over evil or not, our negotiators (Dasgupta, Ghosh et al) certainly have their heart in the right place. Lets hope Pershing and his ilk listen to the voice of reason and take positive strides ahead instead of engaging in jugglery with recondite jargon and distracting attention all the time. Time for some *real* action on the part of Uncle Sam and its representatives.
Utsav
It is wonderful to see India’s recent stand !
I am definitely listening Mr. Ghosh and Mr. Dasgupta, and I am sure many more like me are listening too!
Great going!
But as the time ticks down to december, things don’t seem to be in great shape come Copenhagen summit.
Great going Leela!!! U.S. needs to pay for its karma, whether Jonathan Pershing likes it or not.
Mr Ghosh go for it we are all with you!!
to Mr. Ghosh: the challenge lies in that we are not listening and neither are they. what will it take to get the messages across? How about putting on the table what we are doing for starters, and going from there? then, you look at your children and your grand children (and this goes for both sides) and you ask yourself genuinely whether what you are doing is even remotely enough. the answer should be obvious–no. Because quite frankly, we have to redefine development quite radically to save future generations. the question is who will out do whom in order to build this new world order?
great going Leela….as for INDIA its time for stoic leadership now, before its too late…its US and all mere rhetoric for leading towards future..so we are here to watch INDIA… nice post
Countries like the USA need to realize that success comes with a price as well as a responsibilty and dodging both will only earn them raised brows.Back here in India, their strategies and advances are being tracked minutely.India has taken a progressive stand on the negotiations and we all support it firmly back here!and the we also hope to see an equally cooperative response from the others and we are still expectant of positives from the upcoming Copenhagen Summit
