Which side is EU on?

Ännu en varm dag har passerat i Bangkok och förhandlarna sitter innanför och för låndragna diskussioner om vad som bör göras. Allt medan planeten lider av feber. Det är tragiskt. Men ibland händer det saker, det var precis vad som hände måndags.
Ur detta stycke: “The US, supported by AUSTRALIA, JAPAN, the EU, NORWAY and others, proposed creating a separate sub-group on proposals relating to common mitigation elements. INDIA and several others opposed, stressing that such proposals are inconsistent with the Convention as they would impose new requirements on developing countries. The US stressed it would be difficult to move forward on other issues without seloving this subject matter.” (ENB 29 sept)
För att sätta liv på denna torra text så gick Jonathan Pershing, USAs förhandlare ut med att i princip inte alls kan röra sig och lägga fram konstruktiva förslag. Han fick kraftigt svar på tal av Indien att detta minsann inte alls kunde gå vägen eftersom USA minsann också måste göra sin del.
Vad jag lägger märke till är att EU med Sverige som EU-ledarskap väljer USAs sida i just den här minikonflikten som blossade upp rätt kraftigt. Det betyder att just nu så har vi en nord-syd polarisation. EU borde snarare stödja förslag som för förhandlingarna framåt som stora delar av Asien det senaste gjort.
Vi europeer som bloggar här på adopt a negotiator vill snart engagera era läsare. Så fundera ett tag på vad Europa har för position och de inte alltid är klimatledande.

Yet a warm day has passed here in Bangkok and the negotiators are sitting inside, busy with lengthy discussion on what to do. Meanwhile, our planet suffers from fever. It is tragical. But once in a while, things happen. And things happened yesterday.

To bring life to this dull text Jonathan Pershing, the U.S negotiator, confessed his incapability to make progress on the topic and put forward constructive proposals. India gave him tit for tat and made it clear that this is not acceptable since also the U.S should be obliged to do their share.
One thing I particularly notice is that, even in this mini conflict that was suddenly flushed up, the EU – lead by Sweden, choose to support the U.S. That means that we clearly have a polarisation between the north and the south right now. The EU should rather support the suggestions that supports the progress of the negotiations, like great parts of Asia has been doing lately.
