Live: The UN climate talks in Lima

TckTckTck will on the ground in Lima, Peru for the UN Climate Talks (also known as COP20) from December 1 – 14. As delegates from 194 countries gather to work on a global climate deal, we’ll be tracking their progress right here on our Storify liveblog.

  1. DAY 12
    Saturday 13 December
  2. - The gavel is down and the deal is in. This year's climate talks are over and attention will now shift to the next round of negotiations in Paris next December.
    - Our partners are reacting to the events at this week's climate talks and warning governments they are out of touch with the reality of climate change.
    - We will keep bringing you reaction as we get it.
  3. 0430 PET: Ok folks, that's wrap from us. It has been a rollacoster two weeks here in Lima and today's outcome means there is a lot still to plat for on the road to Paris.
  4. 0400 PET: More reactions coming through to the climate conference outcome. Greenpeace warns governments again failed to embrace the clean energy future that is already within reach.

Martin Kaiser, the head of international climate politics at Greenpeace, said:

“Governments have just kicked the can further down the road by shifting all the difficult decisions into the future. The momentum of the China-US agreement has slammed into nearly immobile climate talks. Time is running out and solutions must be delivered before climate chaos becomes inevitable.”
  5. Meanwhile Oxfam said the decisions made in Lima do not foreclose the possibility an agreement in Paris, but do little to improve the odds of success.
  6. Winnie Byanyima, Executive Director of Oxfam International said:

“Negotiators have managed to get the boat in the water from Lima’s shores without sinking, but choppy seas are ahead before they reach Paris. This outcome can only be read as a call to action for people around the world. Governments will not deliver the solutions we need unless more people stand up to make our voices heard. We must continue to build a stronger movement to counteract the narrow interests that are preventing action.”
  7. Friends of the Earth International warned that the international community have failed to make significant progress towards securing an effective climate change agreement in Paris next year.

Friends of the Earth’s International Climate Campaigner Asad Rehman said:

“The only thing these talks have achieved is to reduce the chances of a fair and effective agreement to tackle climate change in Paris next year. Once again poorer nations have been bullied by the industrialised world into accepting an outcome which leaves many of their citizens facing the grim prospect of catastrophic climate change. We have the ingenuity and resources to build the low carbon future we so urgently need – but we still lack the political will."
  8. 0200 PET: Many of our partners have been reacting to the outcome both in Lima and around the world. In a press huddle after the conference, Christian Aid’s Mohamed Adow said that government’s needed to wake up to the action taking place around the world.

People have been marching across the streets in many countries around the world, scientists have been giving clear climate warnings, investors have been responding to that and divesting from fossil fuels. But negotiators here have not set us towards the deal we want.”

  10. Meanwhile, Oxfam’s Kelly Dent warns the finance pledges on the table fall far short of what vulnerable countries need.

Until we see finance being taken seriously, it is going to be very very difficult to see how we are going to get an agreement in Paris… Here in Lima this package did not deliver what was needed on finance. We know what’s needed, what is lacking is political will.”

  12. 0115 PET: So it's all over, the gavel is down and the outcome document is accepted. We will bring you reaction throughout the night as we get it.
  13. 2355 PET: COP20 President introduces the new text to countries, and points out how it has changed from the text presented this morning. To give countries a chance to digest the text the plenary has now been suspended again until 0100 PET.

  15. 2345 PET: New text now out, you can find it here.
  16. 2340 PET: 40 minutes late but the plenary is meeting again in Lima... stay tuned for more...
  17. 2330 PET: Meanwhile the rumour mill is going into overdrive about when the negotiations could wrap up!
  18. 2320 PET: As negotiations were scheduled to get underway again in the plenary, outside activists came to demand a strong deal that ensures climate justice for all. The protesters warned that with the talks already running a day behind schedule, the outlook for a fair and equitable deal seems very remote.
  19. Dipti Bhatnagar, Climate Justice and Energy Coordinator for Friends of the Earth International said:

“Developed countries and corporate polluters have once again paralyzed the UN talks with proposals that were utterly inadequate for developing countries needs. They have prevented our governments from focusing on the real solutions to the climate crisis by shirking their historic responsibilities."
