Climate Action Network International (CAN) released their expectations for the upcoming Conference of Parties in Durban a couple weeks ago. On the fifth day of Climate Talks in Bonn, Julia-Anne Richards, CAN’s International Policy Coordinator, explained CAN’s expectations for what the UN Climate Talks should achieve between now and the Climate Conference in Durban at the end of the year.

Thanks Julie-Ann, but is there a reason why you didn’t mention adaptation at all as part of the elements you’d like to see coming out of Durban? Action on adaptation consists of more than funding. For example, the Cancun Agreements include an Adaptation Committee, a work programme on loss and damage, and a process for developing National Adaptation Plans. If these aren’t put in place along with the issues you mention, an ambition gap would emerge for adaptation as well.

    Hi Richard
Good catch. Absolutely Adaptation Committee, loss and damage and NAPs important. My attempt to compress entire expectations for Durban in less than 3 minutes resulted in brain glitch - not on purpose. CAN’s Durban Expectations document: www.climatenetwork.org outlines our thinking across all elements of outcomes from Durban - including adaptation. We cover the areas you mention and more.
    best regards
    Julie-Anne
