Civil society groups from across the spectrum gathered outside the negotiations Friday morning, as ministers and negotiators gathered at the UNFCCC negotiations to discuss increasing government climate action in the near-term (leading up to 2020).
The majority of those taking part in the action were representatives of civil society groups who walked out of the negotiations in Poland last December protesting how far off track it was. They shouted “Volveremos” as they marched out - “we will return” in Spanish - which is exactly what they did. Stronger, with more supporters, and better equipped to push the effort in the right direction.
The Volveremos Declaration was handed over to the Minister for the Environment for Peru Manual Pulgar-Vidal; Laurence Tubiana, recently nominated special envoy for the French Foreign Affairs Minister, and Venezuela Vice-Minister for Foreign Affairs Claudia Salerno Caldera, listing demands, which were echoed at press conferences later in the day.
