Of trials and tribulations

Indian Soaps full of meaningless sagas, filled with the usual brother sister, extended brother sister relations , among brothers, among brothers’ wives , among mother in laws , among mother in laws’ and wives and the list can go and on. Whats really funny is that most of the audience of these television shows knows how illogical and excruciatingly lengthy they make the daily soaps . For instance there is always a flashback and coming up in the end of the show that takes up all the time .Or how we know how much anguish and struggle we are going to see but still watch the whole program . Or maybe we connect to it because we have our own internal dilemmas that we have to sort out and make sure that we are able to answer ourselves.
They become a part of our life, something that give us a reason to get up in the morning , something that is constant in our life and something that empowers body and mind with joyful energy and makes for great conversation and social skills.
But regardless of whatever we do , we still have faith , faith that geet will meet maan and happily live after, faith that yes one day the lead protagonist will be happily free of the evil counterpart and that good will defeat evil .
Its exactly this faith that I want to reinstill. Only if you have faith in the proces will it work , only when you have faith taht your fever will vanish away will it actually leave .
In our meeting with Christiana Figueres today morning , she made me realise so many of the valid arguments that just go overlooked. This process is complicated and is filled with trials and tribulations of its own. She recalled at the Bali negotiations talks were stalled for hours over just the issue of a comma, but that one comma can change the world.
We can’t expect that the world will change at the drop of a hat, what is three years of negotiating which gets us to even some kind of consensus rather than the mass scale effects of climate change that we will face in the years to come , much more intense than what they are right now.Prevention is better than cure. Lets invest a few years in a process mind you which is the only process at the moment which can adequatly address the issues at hand but also has given all the countries a chance to try and get to a consensus.
We are all here at these the negotiations after a few months and just have the same feeling about the closing plenary hearing the same interventions from all the countries almost like it was a pre- recorded tape playing continously in our brains. Sometimes I personally get lost in the noise and always reflect on why I find myself here and how effective is this process .Almost getting cynical. There is noone else better who could have addressed this feeling better than Christiana Figueres , the Executive Secretary of the UNFCCC who has strictly told us, ‘none of you have the permission to be cynical’ .
Being youth we always have a more idealist view on things where we can often forget the complexities of what is at our hands which is a much more complex process. But thats the stage we learn the most don’t we? and here’s what I have leanrt today while listening to Yemen take the floor on behalf of G 77 in the background, I want to strengthen my relationship with my negotiators by meeting up with them atleast twice before Cancun highlighting :
- What actions people in the world and those specifically Indians are undertaking and showcasing them the great stories that emerge from out youth movements and wsate pickers or microfinance models which assist local climate finance and so many other innovative models that have come to the fore. We are doing our but
- I would love to to reinterate my faithin my negotiators to do their best, because often in the story of over analysing the indian position we somehow lose the chance to say thank you for pushing for the best atleast.
- I would then like to ask them what there plans for the time they take off for Cancun are ? and wish them all the best for the BASIC meeting.
- Along with the GCCA partners maybe we could try and push out information and messages through Radio, which is an untapped resource and maybe I could get a Hindi software and blog in Hindi once in a while.
- and lastly I would definitely check whether I turen my PC off at home , since I know I leave the wifi router on so that I internalise the very reason for what we are working for.
Waiting to hear India in the plenary.
Leela ,yes, how illogical these serials may be,it gives some sort of hope.It gives me hope that one day Geet and Maan will unite and live happy everafter.THis hope also shows in my day today routine.Every morning when I get up ,again is this hope which gives me hope to start afresh.Just like the comma which can change the world ,this hope makes me feel that some good is on the way .
