It’s official (or at least we think it is). Lars Løkke Rasmussen, Denmark’s Prime Minister sent out formal invitations to Heads of State to attend the Copenhagen climate talks this December. Full text of the invitation reads:
[Your Excellency],
In less than a month The United Nations Climate Change Conference will commence in Copenhagen. Our efforts will be judged by the citizens of the world on December 18 when we close the conference.
Over recent months an increasing number of Heads of State and Government have engaged positively in extensive consultations leading up to the conference. Many coutnries have already announced or passed significant legislation to reduce emission levels and adapt to the negative effects of climate change.
At the High Level Event organized by the Secretary General in New York on 22 September 2009, I stated that concluding an ambitious agreement would require full engagement at the highest political level.
Numerous Heads of State and Government have engaged positively and indicated their intention to attend the conference in Copenhagen. I welcome this political momentum. Following contacts with The Secretary General of the United Nations, it is therefore my great pleasure to invite you to The United Nations Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen.
The Programme at the level of Heads of State and Government will commence with a gala dinner hosted by Her Majesty the Queen on Thursday 17 December followed by meetings and activities on Friday 18 December as we conclude the conference.
Your personal attendance is a pivotal contribution to a successful outcome of The United Nations Climate Change Conference. I therefore hope to receive positive confirmation of your participation at your earliest possible convenience.
Looking forward to welcoming you in Copenhagen.
[Signed by] Lars Lokke Rasmussen.
